Poker Flop, Turn and River Strategy: C-Bets, 3-Bets, Check-Raise and Value Betting
After the flop, poker becomes about planning: each bet should have a reason. This guide explains how to think about the flop, turn and river, and when to use a continuation bet, a 3-bet or a check-raise.
Preflop strategy: opens, calls and 3-bets
A raise before the flop is usually 2.5 to 3 big blinds. A 3-bet is the first re-raise; it is both a way to build the pot with strong hands (AA, KK, AK) and a bluff with hands like A5s. Do not 3-bet too often out of position, and avoid calling raises with weak offsuit hands.
Flop strategy
- Continuation bet (c-bet): if you raised preflop and are first to act, bet about half to two thirds of the pot on dry boards (like K-7-2 rainbow).
- Wet boards with many draws (like J-T-9 with two hearts): be more careful with weak hands and bet bigger with strong ones.
- Check back with medium-strength hands to control the pot.
- Use the board texture, your position and the number of opponents to decide.
Turn strategy
The turn is where pots grow. Keep betting strong hands and good draws. Consider checking weak showdown hands. With a draw that missed, decide whether you still have enough equity to bluff or should give up. Bet sizing usually moves up to two thirds or the pot size.
River strategy
- Value bet when you think worse hands can call.
- Bluff with hands that block your opponent's strong holdings or missed draws.
- Fold when the price is right and you beat only bluffs.
- A thin value bet is a bet with a medium-strong hand that is still ahead of what opponents call with.
Check-raise and bet sizing
A check-raise is a strong move when you are out of position: it shows strength and builds a big pot. Use it with very strong hands and strong draws. For sizing, a half-pot bet needs to work 33% of the time to break even as a bluff, a pot-size bet needs 50%.
When to fold, call or raise
| Situation | Typical choice |
|---|---|
| Strong made hand, opponent bets | Raise for value or call to let them bluff |
| Medium hand, small bet | Call |
| Medium hand, big bet on a scary board | Fold |
| Strong draw, big pot | Raise as a semi-bluff or call with good odds |
| Nothing, nobody wants the pot | Bluff with a good story, otherwise check |
