When to bluff

Semi-bluffs

A semi-bluff is a bet or raise with a hand that is not good now but can improve, like a flush draw or open-ended straight draw. It can win in two ways: the opponent folds, or you hit your draw. Semi-bluffs are often better than pure bluffs.

Check-raise bluffs

A check-raise is when you check and then raise after an opponent bets. As a bluff it can win a big pot when you are out of position. Use it sparingly, on boards where the opponent often c-bets, and with a draw as backup.

Poker tells

Without a live table, tells come from behavior: how quickly someone acts, whether they use the time bank, bet sizes that change, chat patterns and timing. A very fast call often shows a draw or a weak made hand; a long pause followed by a big raise can mean a strong hand. Keep notes and look for patterns, not one-off clues.

Frequently asked questions

A bluff is a bet or raise with a weak hand to make a better hand fold.

How do I control tilt in poker?

Take breaks, set loss limits, and focus on playing well rather than on the result of a single hand.

Do tells work in online poker?

Yes, but they are timing and betting patterns, not physical tells. Look for patterns over many hands.
