The History of Poker: From 19th Century Riverboats to Online Poker
Poker has no single inventor. The game grew over several centuries from older card games, and its modern forms were shaped in America. Here is a short, accurate timeline.
Before poker: the card-game ancestors
Historians point to several earlier games that involved betting on card combinations and bluffing, including the Persian game As-Nas, the French game Poque and the German game Pochen. French settlers carried Poque to New Orleans in the early 1800s, where it spread along the Mississippi and became "poker".
The 1800s: riverboats and the 52-card deck
By the mid-1800s the game was played with a 52-card deck, and the flush was added as a hand. Draw poker and stud poker appeared during and after the American Civil War. Poker moved west with settlers, and Wild West saloons made the game famous.
Texas Hold'em and the World Series of Poker
Texas Hold'em is believed to have started in Robstown, Texas in the early 1900s. Texas gamblers brought it to Las Vegas in the 1960s. The World Series of Poker began in 1970, and Hold'em soon became its main event. The game that fits a short deal and a lot of strategy had spread to every card room.
Online poker and the poker boom
The first online poker rooms appeared in the late 1990s. In 2003 an amateur named Chris Moneymaker qualified for the World Series main event through an online satellite, and won. The result sparked the "poker boom", and millions of new players learned the game through TV and websites.
Poker today: mobile and social poker
Today poker is played in clubs, tournaments, home games and on phones. Social poker platforms let friends meet at a virtual table from anywhere. POKR BUDDY is built for this: private tables, simple invites and the classic games of Texas Hold'em and Omaha.
