Poker Bankroll Management and Buy-Ins Explained
A poker bankroll is the money you set aside only for poker. Managing it well keeps you playing through the normal ups and downs of the game, without risking money you need for life.
What is a buy-in?
A buy-in is the amount of chips you bring to the table, or the entry fee for a tournament. At cash tables the buy-in is usually between a minimum and a maximum, such as 40 to 200 big blinds. In a tournament, everyone pays the same entry and gets the same starting stack.
How many buy-ins should I keep?
| Format | Suggested bankroll |
|---|---|
| Cash games | 20 to 30 buy-ins for the stake you play |
| Sit & Go | 50 or more buy-ins |
| Multi-table tournaments | 100 or more buy-ins |
These are guidelines: more buy-ins means less risk of going broke during a bad run. Move down in stakes after a losing streak instead of chasing losses.
Chip denominations and the chip calculator
At a live game, chips come in colours. An easy home game set: white = 1, red = 5, green = 25, black = 100. A chip calculator or blind calculator helps decide how many chips each denomination you need for a given number of players and starting stack. Online, chips are counted for you.
Session limits
- Set a stop-loss (the most you will lose in one session) and a time limit before you start.
- Never rebuy automatically after a bad beat.
- Keep poker money separate from everyday money.
